I’m Speechless
even if you’re a democrat, this will make you feel bad for sarah palin: here is a transcript from the program where katie couric discusses interviewing palin with co-host maggie rodriguez:
RODRIGUEZ: So what were your impressions of the governor?
COURIC: Well, I think she is very confident and very cool, calm and collected under very difficult circumstances. Obviously, she has become an overnight sensation, an instant celebrity, but she seems to be taking it all in stride. I think she is boning up on a number of issues that she is not as familiar with as governor, and she does–she’s not always responsive when she’s asked questions and sometimes does slip back to her talking points. So it was a really interesting experience for me to interview her yesterday.

COURIC: OK.
(Beginning of excerpt from “CBS Evening News”)
COURIC: Why isn’t it better, Governor Palin, to spend $700 billion helping middle-class families who are struggling with health care, housing, gas and groceries; allow them to spend more and put more money into the economy instead of helping these big financial institutions that played a role in creating this mess?
Chris rock larry king
Governor SARAH PALIN (Republican, Vice Presidential Nominee): That’s why I say I, like every American I’m speaking with, were ill about this position that we have been put in where it is the taxpayers looking to bail out. But ultimately, what the bailout does is help those who are concerned about the health care reform that is needed to help shore up our economy, helping the–it’s got to be all about job creation, too, shoring up our economy and putting it back on the right track. So health care reform and reducing taxes and reining in spending has got to accompany tax reductions and tax relief for Americans. And trade, we’ve got to see trade as opportunity not as a competitive, scary thing. But one in five jobs being created in the trade sector today, we’ve got to look at that as more opportunity. All those things under the umbrella of job creation. This bailout is a part of that.

What is Palin really saying? Let’s break it down:
First, Palin suggests the bailout is tied to health care reform which will “shore up the economy.” What is the link between the bailout and health care reform? Through the mechanism of “those who are concerned.” Hmmm…OK, let’s stay open-minded.
Second, health care reform is also tied to job creation, and since health care reform is linked to the bailout, therefore job creation must ALSO be linked to bailout. Now we’re getting somewhere.
Third, Palin says health care reform is also tied to reducing taxes and reining in spending, and since health care reform is tied to the bailout, tax reduction and spending control must ALSO be linked to the bailout. Wow, this is quite brilliant. We’re solving a lot of problems with this $700 billion.
wjz.com - CBS Evening News Anchor Katie Couric Sits Down With Vice …
CBS News anchor Katie Couric sat down for an exclusive interview with vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin Wednesday, she focused on the economy - but also …
Fourth, job creation — which is linked to health care reform which is linked to the bailout — just happens to be an important part of the trade sector, so trade, which we have to see as an opportunity, is an important part of the bailout package too.
For the visually minded, here is a flow chart of the Palin Economy
But I think I’ve detected why Palin sounded confused. As the chart above shows, it’s not the banking system that needs fixing, but the health care system. But either way, she also does seem to be saying that not only will the bailout help us with the overall economy, but we’ll also improve health care, jobs, trade, the budget, AND the tax system. Now that’s a plan we can all get behind.

A resolution, I trust
ALL that stuff about markets treading water? Forget about it. Indexes rose over 4% to end the day, making everyone feel good except the poor saps at Lehman who may end up being the only ones left without a bailout of their very own. Cheer up, guys! It could be worse! You could be living in a tent city.

The row olsen
The reason for the surge, it seems, is the suggestion that Hank Paulson and Ben Bernanke are pursuing what’s being called a more comprehensive solution to the crisis. It’s unclear what that solution might be, however. Many individuals have called for a new Resolution Trust Corporation or Home Owners’ Loan Corporation, the function of which would be to purchase troubled securities and mortgages from sinking firms in order to get all the junk out of the system at a stroke.
New York Democratic senator Chuck Schumer, who said he had spoken to Mssrs Paulson and Bernanke regarding the possibility of a broader solution, offered a different approach:
Schumer urged forming an agency to inject funds into financial companies in exchange for equity stakes and pledges to rewrite mortgages and make them more affordable. His remarks indicate momentum is building for some wider plan after the Fed and Treasury’s takeovers of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and American International Group Inc. this month.

Schumer advocated a Great Depression-era Reconstruction Finance Corp. model, different from the Resolution Trust Corp.- type plan others have floated. Another RTC, which was a 1990s agency that sold devalued assets in the Savings and Loan Crisis, would “simply transfer excessive risk to the U.S. government without addressing the plight of homeowners,” he said.
Housing Needs an RTC (Not a Bailout)
Friday, July 18, 2008 The fastest way to get policymak-ers to run for the door has been to mention the "B" word: bailout. Of course, nobody likes bailouts.
The difference being, it seems, whether the government takes ownership of the troubled securities themselves or of stakes in the companies holding them. It will be interesting to hear the logic behind that proposal. One thing is clear, as Felix Salmon points out:
What I do know is that all of the rumors and noise surrounding this story are going to keep a lot of reporters up very late tonight, despite the fact that most of them haven’t had a decent kip since Saturday.
That’s something I was thinking about earlier today. Can you imagine the amount of steam that’s going to be let off in Manhattan this weekend? The sheer scope of the likely debauchery is unimaginable. Almost makes me want to buy a train ticket. Perhaps our New York correspondents can provide coverage.

Sarah Palin’s Jazzy Mayoral Camaign Ad [Advertising]

sure, the elitists at the washington brief reported sarah palin “left [a] trail of bad blood” as mayor of tiny wasilla, alaska, and local homemaker anne kilkenny famously emailed the whole earth to say the republican vice presidential nominee was a “ruthless” city politico. but as the attached clip show, palin at least started out wanting to spread change and await, not unequal to a certain other politician stylish on a presidential ticket. “i want to look after a positive energy and determined voice to your ideas,” palin said in her debut mayoral campaign spot, signed “positively sarah.” the feathered curls and keyboard-and-trumpet poop will burnish your evening all on their own! the clip is after the rail.

Zardari vows to fight militants
Update: And Towns took it by a 67-33 margin (h/t commenter Progressive America). We wanted to endorse in this one as there aren’t that many good primary candidates, but due diligence kept us back.
Meanwhile, Alice Kryzan has expanded her lead a bit over Jon Powers. With 335 of 369 Precincts Reporting (91%), she has 42% of the vote, Powers has 36% of the vote, and Davis has 23% of the vote. Unless Powers takes two thirds of the remaining vote and Kryzan takes none of it, Kryzan is going to take this.
Kryzan endorsed the Responsible Plan to End the War in Iraq, so I have a soft spot for her. At the same time, this really was about Jon Powers and Jack Davis really going after each other with a viciousness in a primary I’ve rarely seen and leaving room for Kryzan to sneak through. Powers was a Red to Blue candidate and an Orange to Blue candidate, so he had establishment backing and netroots backing.
My guess, not having seen the data but knowing a bit about Kryzan’s career as a glass ceiling shattering attorney and the contours of the race, is that the women went for Kryzan.
Update (Chris): Detailed results for NY-26 can be found at Rochester Turning. With 268 of 272 precincts reporting, Kryzan leads 44.0% to 33.4% for Powers and 22.6% for Davis. It’s over. The result makes me happy. Also, keep an eye on Kryzan for the general election. Surprise primary winners had a good run in 2006. Zach Space, Carol Shea Porter and Jerry McNerney all won. Larry Kissell lost by only the narrowest of margins.
